ASSISTANT DIRECTOR / VETERANS RESOURCE CENTER

Position Summary:

This position is responsible for assisting the director of the Veterans Resource Center with military-affiliated students (veterans, active-duty service members and/or spouses and children of veterans) as it relates to veterans’ records, benefits, and concerns including completing enrollment certifications, advising, maintaining student records, and advocating on the student’s behalf. In addition, the position may train CMU School Certifying Official ( SCO )’s in SCO requirements and how to problem-solve presented issues as requested by the Director. In the Director’s absence, the Assistant Director ensures continuity in the functioning of the Veterans’ Resource Center, including supervising student employees, problem resolution, and decision-making.


Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree or a combination of education and experience that equates to four years.
Two years of experience as a School Certifying Official using the Department of Veterans Affairs Enrollment Manager (formerly VAOnce) system.
Experience working with Veteran Administration (VA) programs as they relate to the use of educational benefits, vocational rehabilitation programs, and general services available to veterans and their families.
Proven knowledge of Federal Tuition Assistance and State Tuition Assistance programs.
Demonstrated ability to create and effectively use databases.
Proven ability to be a self-starter and work in a fast-paced team environment.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel).
Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Positive interpersonal and customer service skills.
Ability to project a positive and professional image while representing the University.
Ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.


Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s Degree or a combination of education and experience that equates to six years.
Experience working in a non-traditional higher education environment.
Experience with higher education financial aid and finance debt reconciliation.
Experience with an enterprise resource planning application, i.e., SAP , CRM / SLCM .
Preference will be given to honorably discharged military veterans.


Duties & Responsibilities:

Accurately certifies on-campus users of GI Bill® benefits with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in accordance with federal law and regulations.
Assists the Director of the Veterans Resource Center on GI Bill® certifications along with CMU policy and procedure creation.
Updates and maintains student records in SAP and applicable resources on the center’s website.
Audits veterans’ course schedules to ensure courses meet VA requirements.
Assists in student outreach and retention activities directed towards veterans who have not returned to school and/or finished their degrees.
Accurately processes enrollment/registration certifications in a timely manner.
Provides student information regarding funding sources, state programs for veterans, veterans groups on campus, general information, etc.
Advises students regarding whether coursework meets VA requirements for certification and if not, recommends alternatives.
Advises students on how to address financial issues (i.e., loans, account holds, the impact of dropping/withdrawing from courses, debt reconciliation, etc.) and assists students with transfer credit issues.
Creates and runs statistical reports to verify and track enrollments, benefits, etc.
Serves as the campus advisor to university administration, faculty, staff, students, and relevant others regarding VA education benefit programming and eligibility.
Represents the Veterans’ Resource Center on University committees and subcommittees.
Assists with Veterans’ Resource Center training and events, including training & communicating VA issues with other CMU SCOs.
Performs other duties as assigned.
