Senior Civil/Resident Engineer

Resident Engineer (P.E. License Required) Location: Detroit, MI Employment Type: Full-time Pay Range: $115,000 - $200,000 per year Position Overview A leading civil engineering firm is seeking an experienced Resident Engineer to oversee construction inspection and field operations for major infrastructure projects. The ideal candidate will be a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of Michigan, with a strong background in transportation, highway, and bridge construction. This role is responsible for ensuring the quality, accuracy, and successful delivery of construction projects by managing field staff, coordinating with contractors and agencies, and maintaining compliance with plans, specifications, and safety standards. Key Responsibilities Lead field operations and supervise contractors on site to ensure high-quality construction in compliance with project documents. Review and monitor schedules, change orders, RFIs, submittals, and weekly reports. Perform constructability reviews and recommend solutions to project challenges. Coordinate with local utilities, agencies, and private stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle. Approve contractor pay applications, maintain inspection logs, and document construction progress. Prepare and oversee correspondence with contractors and clients; handle claims and project close-out. Mentor and develop inspection staff through on-site training and performance reviews. Ensure all work adheres to local and state codes, regulations, and safety practices. Maintain orderly and accurate project records and documentation. Support Construction Manager in performance evaluations and team leadership. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. Minimum 15 years of experience in construction engineering, with at least 5 years in highway and bridge projects. Active P.E. License in Michigan (Mandatory). Strong knowledge of construction methods, material testing, erosion and sediment control, and inspection practices. Valid driver's license and clean driving record (past 3 years). Erosion and Sediment Control Training (preferred). Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project leadership skills. Ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously and work independently.
