POSITION SUMMARY
Potterville Public Schools seeks an enthusiastic, organized, and musically excellent Secondary Band & Music Teacher to lead and grow our 6-12 instrumental music program. The successful candidate will direct concert band, marching band, pep band, and jazz ensemble (as program supports), while teaching general music courses as assigned. This position is central to building a vibrant music culture that serves students, energizes school spirit, and engages the Potterville community at performances, athletic events, festivals, and parades.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Music Education from an accredited institution
- Valid State of Michigan Teaching Certificate with Music (JQ or equivalent) endorsement appropriate for secondary grade levels
- Demonstrated proficiency on multiple instruments across woodwind, brass, and percussion families
- Successful completion of all required background checks (ICHAT, FBI fingerprint, and unprofessional conduct disclosure per MCL 380.1230b and 380.1230d)
- Evidence of effective oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings (concerts, rehearsals), Friday nights (football season), and Saturdays (festivals, parades, competitions)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's degree in Music, Music Education, Conducting, or related field
- Prior successful teaching and directing experience at the secondary level
- Experience preparing ensembles for MSBOA District and State Band & Orchestra Festival
- Marching band design, drill writing, and field show experience
- Jazz pedagogy and ensemble direction experience
- Membership in MMEA, MSBOA, or NAfME and active participation in professional learning
- Demonstrated success in growing program enrollment and family/community engagement
SUBJECT-AREA EXPERTISE
- Ability to direct concert band at junior high and high school levels with literature appropriate to MSBOA grade levels
- Ability to direct marching band including halftime shows, parades, & school spirit events
- Knowledge of instrument repair basics and inventory management for a 6-12 program
- Ability to teach private/small-group lessons during the school day to build individual musicianship
- Capacity to teach general music, music appreciation, music theory, or related electives as assigned
- Vision and skills to recruit, retain, and grow the band program from the elementary feeder grades through graduation
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Instruction & Ensemble Direction
- Plan and deliver high-quality, standards-aligned music instruction across all assigned ensembles and classes
- Direct concert band, marching band, pep band, and any additional ensembles as program develops
- Select age- and ability-appropriate literature that develops musicianship and prepares ensembles for performance and festival
- Conduct individual and sectional rehearsals to build technical and musical skills
- Assess student progress through performance, playing tests, written work, and reflection
Performances & Festivals
- Plan, schedule, and conduct concerts, recitals, & showcases throughout the school year
- Prepare and accompany marching band and pep band at home football games, select away games, pep assemblies, and community events
- Prepare ensembles for MSBOA District and State Band & Orchestra Festival, Solo & Ensemble, and other approved events
- Coordinate logistics for performances including transportation requests, facility setup, programs, and parent communication
Program Development & Recruitment
- Build a strong feeder program through partnership with elementary music staff
- Lead recruitment activities including instrument try-out nights, beginner band orientation, and parent information sessions
- Promote retention through positive culture, meaningful performance opportunities, and individual student attention
- Develop and steward the Band Boosters relationship to support fundraising, chaperoning, and uniform/instrument needs
Equipment, Facilities & Budget
- Maintain accurate inventory of school-owned instruments, uniforms, equipment, and music library
- Coordinate routine instrument maintenance, repair, and replacement within budget guidelines
- Manage program budget responsibly and submit purchase requests through proper channels
- Ensure safe handling, storage, and transportation of equipment for off-site events
Classroom Environment & Student Support
- Establish and maintain a positive, disciplined, and inclusive ensemble culture aligned with Vikings character expectations
- Build strong relationships with students that support belonging, leadership development, and lifelong love of music
- Implement accommodations and modifications outlined in IEPs, 504 plans, and ELL plans
- Foster student leadership through section leaders, drum majors, and ensemble officer roles
Professional Collaboration & Community Engagement
- Participate actively in department, building, and district meetings and professional development
- Collaborate with the choral/general music teacher(s), athletic department, and administration on shared events
- Communicate regularly and proactively with families regarding schedules, expectations, and student progress
- Represent Potterville Public Schools positively at community events, parades, and regional festivals
Other Duties
- Maintain accurate records including attendance, grades, lesson plans, and required documentation
- Comply with all federal, state, and district policies including FERPA, Title IX, copyright law for music, and mandated reporter requirements
- Supervise students during travel and at all program-related events
- Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or designee
PHYSICAL & WORKING CONDITIONS
- Ability to stand and conduct for extended periods, including outdoors in variable weather for marching band and parades
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally (equipment, instruments, percussion, podiums)
- Ability to demonstrate on multiple instruments and model proper technique
- Visual and auditory acuity sufficient to monitor large ensembles, identify musical errors, and respond to safety concerns
- Work includes frequent evening, Friday night, and weekend hours during marching season and concert/festival periods
- Ability to travel with students to away events, festivals, and competitions
EVALUATION
Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Michigan Revised School Code and Board of Education policy, using the district-adopted teacher evaluation framework. Evaluations are conducted annually and include classroom observations, evidence of student growth, and contributions to the school community.
